In OTP Invest we monitor hundreds of charts and indicators. One of the most interesting indicators is our in-house built daily FLOW INDICATOR.
Flow is an important behavioral concept, telling us how investors are positioned. The indicator covers around 150 ETFs, holding over $2.5 Trillion in assets.
We are looking at thousands of flow series across every industry, country (DM, EM), currency, strategy (cyclical over defensives), maturity, style, etc., and sorting them into risky/risk-off assets.
Looking at the beginning of 2020. we can notice a huge outflow from risky assets, although COVID-19 news had only partially begun to appear in newspapers and markets looked fairly stable.
Then the flows could help us a lot.
We update our indicator on a daily basis, so we would like to stress a very challenging situation where the dominance of risky assets starts to fade while markets are still rising, showing us huge divergence and positioning of investors in risk-off assets. It is known that great support for the markets so far has been given by small investors and it will certainly be interesting to see if this is a sign of their exhaustion.
